About the journal
The decisions behind a miniature railway. Updated 28 October 2026.
Why The Model Yard exists
A miniature railway brings together space, observation, engineering conventions and a story about a place. The Model Yard helps railway modellers, scenery makers and collectors turn those competing demands into considered decisions. It is an English-language editorial journal for readers planning a first layout as well as those refining a scene, documenting a collection or working with a club.
What the journal covers
Layout Craft considers space, access and operating purpose. Scale & Standards explains dimensions and interfaces. Rolling Stock connects vehicles with a purposeful roster. Scenery Workshop explores observation, materials and composition. Club & Collection addresses shared projects, records and the culture around the hobby.
Research and original contribution
Articles begin with a specific reader question and draw on identifiable references, including modelling associations, standards bodies and preservation institutions. The linked sources provide background evidence; our contribution is the explanation, comparison, decision process or record that helps a reader apply it. Worksheets and worked examples offer a practical next step rather than simply repeating a source summary.
Reading the evidence
Published articles link their factual sources. A general guide does not replace a current standard, product manual or material instruction. Regional practice, scale and individual equipment can change the answer. Fictional examples are labelled as hypothetical, and they are not reports of physical tests, visits or measured product performance. The editorial standards describe these boundaries in more detail.
Editorial independence and attribution
The Model Yard is not an official publication of a manufacturer, railway, museum, club or standards organisation. Mentioning an organisation or linking a document does not imply endorsement. Photograph credits identify the creator, source and licence; attribution and permission are separate matters. See the image credits before reusing an image.
Corrections and continued usefulness
A useful article should make its assumptions clear and remain open to correction. When identifying a possible error, specify the page, the statement and the evidence that changes the conclusion. Publication dates and substantive review dates have different meanings; a reviewed older article should not be presented as newly reported news. No fixed publishing schedule or personal response time is promised.
